Ovarian Cancer 5k recap

So last Saturday I got up at 5:30 am to do my 1st 5k of the year. I didn't even know about it until Thursday night when I happened to see an email about it. I thought, well, why not? I'd not really trained for a 5k...have been more on the lax side of running the last few weeks, and not doing many tempo or interval runs. But, I wanted to do it. I'd been missing them so much. Getting sick the end of January and the long recovery, etc, really knocked me out for some fun races, and then we always seemed to be outta town for the other ones.

This race was in a beautiful location, the most exclusive subdivision in town, so the landscaping was gorgeous, houses were pimped out...just nice. It started going downhill for about .2 miles, took a turn onto the main entry into the neighborhood, and then veered sharply off to the left thru a bit of wet grass/mud to a little golf cart trail that looped around an old sunken phosphate mine/lake. It was a bit tricky in the beginning, as the sprinklers made the way slick and there were hairpin turns throughout, as well as insanely steep ups and downs. I'd never run anything like that, where it felt like a trail, yet was a fully paved course. Needless to say, the lack of running hills in my 'hood, and lack of training on quick turnover, showed, and I ended w/ a 30.57 time! HA! I did take a few walk breaks, esp up the insane small hills, that I prob'ly was walking at the same pace I woulda jogged it anyhow, so yeah...Prob'ly one of my worst times, but after checking the results, somehow placed THIRD! hhaa. I was like, SERIOUSLY?! It really cracked me up and made my day. I'm glad I was one of the few 30-34 yr olds that got up early to show up. Participation was down this year...I'd guess only around 100 runners were there. It was nice having my Garmin and tracking my distance/pace throughout, and I didn't over exert myself either, knowing my time wasn't going to be great anyhow. So, I felt pretty darn good afterward. We ended the day by getting ready and driving 2 hrs to the east coast to my long favorite New Smyrna Beach. We had a fabulous time. I got a lot of reading in, and we taught the kids how to boogie board. They did it for hours and were having a hoot! Fun times. I feel like the beach is home.

Me and the boys before the race. Miles wasn't feeling it. He woke up crying and asking why he was awake bc it was still night outside:))
And, we're off.
Bringing it home. Course it had to be all uphill for the last .2 of the race. Hhhhh.
Nice and sweaty. My boys sporting some free swag.

Love these guys. Randall is always so good about coming to support me. I love seeing them at the finish!
Nothing like getting a bronze after watching the Olympics for 2 weeks. HA!

Me on the medal stand. I hate this pic of me. Hhhaa. But i love the stand. Cool idea! A girl I know, also named Cortney, placed 1st w/ a 25 min and change.

  1. Never been to race where they had me on a stand for being in the top 3. I'm jealous.

  2. Me neither! Ha. I've only gotten 3rd a few times and usually they just hand you the medal and that's it. Pretty humorous.
